Gratitude

Today is American Thanksgiving.  Here in Canada we celebrate it in early October.  I’ve been reading many posts on gratitude.  A newsletter arrived in my inbox today that invited us to go a bit further than expressing gratitude for things like our children, our home, our family.  This came from Aurora Winter of www.griefcoachacademy.com :

Dear Barb,

It is Thanksgiving and there is so very much

to be grateful for.

But let’s go deeper. Are you willing to be

grateful for all the people and things you

take for granted?

Let’s go even deeper. Are you willing to be

grateful for all those things that bring

you pain?

That death of a loved one … what did it

teach you? How did you grow in wisdom and

compassion? Are you willing to be grateful

for the gifts you received from grief?

That divorce … what did it teach you?

How did it help you evolve? How did it carve

your being into something even more extraordinary,

like the ocean carves the cliffs in Santa Barbara?

Are you willing to be grateful for the gifts you

received from heartbreak?

That financial loss … what did it teach you?

Are your values still the same as before?

Or are you even more acutely aware that what

really matters in life is love? That loving

people – not money – is our true treasure?

Are you willing to be grateful for the gifts

you received from loss?

This Thanksgiving, I invite you to go deeper

with your gratitude.

Receive ALL the gifts that have been so lovingly

prepared for you. Gifts crafted to carve

your soul exquisitely, just as Michelangelo

lovingly chiseled a hunk of featureless marble

to reveal the awe-inspiring statue of David.

Sometimes it hurts when the Master Sculptor

chips another piece away. It hurts. I know.

But don’t miss the gifts! Don’t be blinded by

your tears! Step back, step back … behold!

YOU are that statue of David – or Venus

de Milo.

Breathtaking.

What you see revealed is the translucent soul

of a Spiritual Master.

We are all Spiritual Masters when we are willing

to be grateful … no matter what.

Sending you my love and gratitude,

Aurora Winter
