There is always a silver lining in all that comes our way, including tough economic times. Less disposable cash means more time at home. More time at home means more opportunities to connect as a family. More opportunities to connect as a family means more time to think creativity.
Susan Loughrin who I will call our resident creative expert here at The Parenting Coach, has shared an interesting idea for movement and creatvity. .
Egg Exercise-Inspired by Twyla Tharp
Written by Susan Loughrin
1. Try this with your children to make and create new shapes using your body.
- Curl up into as small a ball as you can. This is the “egg” base shape.
- Create a different shape by stretching and changing position
- Name your new shape: “What would you call this new shape?”
- Do your shapes move or remain still?
- The one rule is to come back into the original ball/egg shape each time you start again
- Do the exercise along with your child. Take turns and have some fun!
2. Creative thinking: Take the time to really watch and listen to your child. What do you notice? Allow for all shapes. Give your child the freedom to create and name each shape. You can then create and name your own shapes as you take turns.
3. Moving it further:
- Get out some art supplies
- You made and recreate it on paper.
- Have your child think of a favorite shape and recreate it onto paper (or 3D in clay)
- Share in the experience of recreating your shape and invite your child to recreate his/her favorite shape
- Enjoy creating shapes that resemble your “egg” creations.
- Label and sign your work and invite your child to do the same. This is a great way to keep a record of the ideas to revisit and enjoy.
